Singing in Singapore
Dear Friends,
Last week I had to take a one day trip to Singapore and then on to Batam Island in Indonesia. Two bus rides, two plane rides, four taxi rides, two ferry rides and two private car rides. Believe me, I could tell a story about each of those rides but will focus on the taxi ride late Thursday night from the heart of Singapore out to the airport.
After a long day of travel I had to get to the airport by 11:00 pm to catch my flight home. Owning a car in Singapore is very expensive so many people use public transportation, including the taxis. I finally found my way to the taxi stand where maybe 60 people were standing in line, all waiting to get a ride home. The line was moving very slowly and I passed the time by talking with a nice family from India. The father had a high tech position at Intel and the nine year old boy loved cricket.
After a half hour in line, we had not moved very far when all of a sudden a man came up to me and asked if I needed a ride to the airport. I knew that he had a private car and was trying to get passengers. I took a chance, waved goodbye to my new found friends and loaded in his older van with three other groups of passengers. As we round our way around the busy streets of Singapore, I was a bit nervous that this was going to take all night.
As he delivered the last Vietnamese family we were close to the airport so I began to relax a little bit. He was a little crazy looking and talking type of guy and I did not know for sure where he was coming from. It turned out he was a devout Christian and he told me that when he feels stressed he likes to sing the simple children's song, "Jesus Loves Me." As we pulled up to the airport he was singing this song in Mandarin in a very sweet voice.
I thanked him, I thanked God and I checked in, flew home and made it in time to take a short nap before breakfast. Yes, I do believe that angels watch over us by night and by day and sometimes inspire us with song as we travel the pilgrim way along the paths of life.
